Preparing Strawberry Beds
We are excited to grow strawberries that will be available for schools this spring!
Strawberries depend on good soil preparation. Before planting, we focus on bed shape, drainage, and consistent moisture so roots can establish quickly and evenly.
Bed Shaping and Soil Prep
We form raised beds after final soil preparation. Raised beds improve drainage and keep strawberry crowns above standing water during winter rains. Uniform beds also make irrigation and planting more consistent across the field.

Laying Plastic and Drip
Drip tape is laid down the center of each bed, followed by plastic mulch. The plastic helps conserve moisture, warm the soil, and reduce early weed pressure. We adjust the plastic by hand to keep it tight and secure.

Planting Bare-Root Strawberries
We plant bare-root strawberry starts. Before planting, roots are soaked to rehydrate them. Each plant is set with the crown at soil level and the roots directed straight down. Proper depth and root placement help plants establish faster.

Getting the Season Started
This work happens weeks before visible growth. The care taken now affects how plants handle rain, drought, and heat later in the season.
